Use of navigation apps stalling sales of PNDs

Global shipments of PNDs or Personal Navigation Devices fell from 33 million in 2011 to 28 million in 2012 – this is as per Berg Insights.

Lower consumer spending in Europe and the possibility that the installed base of these devices may have peaked are being seen as the major contributing factors.

Free and paid mobile navigation apps are also to blame and the number of people using mobile phones for navigation at least once a month has gone up from 105 million to 150 million in the same period, i.e. 2011 to 2012. With many car manufacturers now including in-dash navigation the sales figures of PNDs have been hit further.

While the PND shipment numbers have gone up in India, Latin American and Eastern Europe they have not been able to make up for the fallen numbers in the developed countries. It is further estimated that PNDs will sell 17 million units in 2017.
