USD 23 billion drop in SMS revenue by 2018

A new research from Informa Telecoms and Media shows that revenues from SMSs are expected to drop by around $5 billion by 2018 in the US alone.

The signs are not good in the other parts of the world as well with Europe expecting a drop in SMS revenue of $7 billion within the same period.

The biggest drop will be in the Asia-Pacific region where the drop is expected to be $8 billion. Considering the same trend in the other parts of the world including Africa and Middle East the total drop in SMS revenue worldwide could be a jaw dropping $23 billion by 2018 compared to now.

Today there are numerous free messaging apps like BBM, WhatsApp and Line. Line announced revenues of $100 million in Q3 of 2013.

All these apps are dominating the market and the age old method of texting within a certain number of characters is surely in decline.
