The Patent Office to invalidate the Apple ‘pinch-to-zoom’ patent?

The Patent and Trademark Office in the USA may just about invalidate the Apple patent request for ‘pinch-to-zoom’.

This follows a review request from Samsung.

It was in the beginning of this year that this patent played a pivotal role in Apple winning a $1.05 billion damages verdict against Samsung.

On Wednesday, December 19th, the Patent Office sent the reports of the initial findings to Apple. The report states that there was prior art for the ‘pinch-to-zoom’ feature on other products. This may mean more than just invalidation but it may also ask Apple to pay royalties to the earlier developers.

In light of these developments Samsung has requested for a review. But due to the preliminary status of the Patent Office’s declaration the process is expected to take about 2 years.

This is twice in the last three months that an Apple patent has been reviewed. Its rubber band user interface was the first one.
