Small phone manufacturers giving large handset companies run for money

More than 20% downloads from Djuzz, the free mobile games portal from BuzzCity, were from local white box manufacturers like MicroMax, Nexian, Spice, K-Touch and others.

This is a huge improvement on the figure of 8% last month.

Djuzz delivers games built on platforms like Java, Flash, Symbian, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry and Android and also caters to the low end phones in the market. The portal recognizes more than 1,800 handsets and delivers games to them.

Gartner says that mobile phone sales rose 35% globally in Quarter III of 2010 to 417 million units and a third of this number is made up of units manufactured by companies not among the top 5 worldwide.

As per Dr. KF Lai, CEO BuzzCity, the small players are bound to cannibalize the market with their imitation expensive models and offerings of multiple features at a lower price. But he believes that the manufacturers of the white box handsets will have to do value addition to remain competitive.
