Record 230 million smartphone shipments worldwide

Strategy Analytics revealed that global smartphone shipments rose a mammoth 47% in Q2 of 2013 and the number now stands at a record 229.6 million from last year’s 156.5 million.

59% of all global mobile phone shipments were smartphones in achieving the largest volume ever in a quarter. The record number has been boosted by an increased demand for 4G devices in the developed markets and 3G devices in the emerging markets like India, a country that recently experienced a 400% growth in tablet sales.

Samsung shipped a third of all Q2 smartphones and grew 56% annually. Samsung shipped a record 76 million units and captured 33% of the market. All these are record breaking numbers for the Korean electronics giant.

Apple was half at 31.2 million units shipped worldwide. Apple also grew 20%, but at less than half of the global increase. LG maintained its third position with 12.1 million units shipped, 5% of the market share.
