One tablet is being sold for every four laptops

As per the latest NPD DisplaySearch Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast Report, 72.7 million tablets were shipped in 2011 against 285.4m units of mobile PCs.

This means a 256% growth for tablets in 2011. This is due to strong demand for iPads, significantly competitive new devices in QIV of 2011 and additional channels of distribution.

Mobile PCs are growing too but not this fast. Notebooks were expected to grow 12% to 187.5 million and mini-note PC shipments were expected to sell 25.2 million units. The gap is closing though.

432 million units of notebooks are expected to ship by 2017 and tablets are supposed to reach 383.3 million units. Ultrabooks from Intel could be the products to watch.

It is expected that Mobile PCs will ship 452.8 million units in emerging regions by 2017. In the mature regions this figure is expected to be 371.6 million units. Tablets will contribute to the overall growth of the mobile PC market.
