Ofcom announces faster and easier way of switching providers

It has been confirmed by Ofcom (Office of Communication) in a recent announcement that transferring an existing mobile number to a new provider will take no more than a single day.

Consumers will no longer have to wait for two days for this operation. This announcement comes after a six week long consultation on the timing of the proposal and legal implementation. However, before this plan is executed, another brief consultation might be conducted. The changes will be effective from the first half of 2011.

Consumers will receive the PAC (Porting Authorization Code) via text message within two hours. The PAC is mandatory for switching from one provider to the other and yet retaining the previous number.

Ed Richards, the Chief Executive of Ofcom, remarks that more than 70 percent of mobile users want to retain their mobile numbers even when they are switching to a new provider. This move will enable consumers to switch providers without inconvenience or cost.
