New social gifting service from Facebook

Online gifting has been a pretty hot space in the last couple or so months.

And firms like Dropgifts, ParcelGenie and Wrapp have found immenses momentum in this area.

Facebook had spotted the trend earlier and launched a “Gift Shop”, but then closed it in August 2010. It then acquired Karma, a social gifting mobile app, in May. Now, a new service based on the Karma offering is being offered by the social media giant.

Facebook Gifts will let users buy and send ‘real’ gifts as they look up birthday reminders, timelines and private messaging. An attached card can be opened for a preview and friends have the option to change or exchange it. It can be dispatched when the postal address is confirmed.

Retailers like Starbucks will back the new service on launch and so will others that specialize in cuddly toys and cakes and more. The service is now live in the USA.
