New evolution of messages from Facebook

Facebook has renewed its message handling system and also updated its iPhone app.

However, contrary to what people are thinking, this new system is not a competition for Gmail, Google’s webmail. This is despite that fact that all Facebook users will now have their own @Facebook.com email addresses.

“The new evolution of messages” as described by Facebook will allow users to gather all communications with their contacts in a single social inbox. This includes emails, IMs and SMSs.

There is no need to worry about the different communication formats preferred by friends. One just needs to choose the name of the friend and send a message.

During the launch of the program at San Francisco, Facebook was keen to stress the fact this new system is not just an email service but something much more than that. The same message was seen in the blog post of Joel Seligstein, blog engineer for the social networking website.
