Mobile PC shipments to cross $590 million in 2016

Juniper Research of UK claims mobile PCs like ultrabooks, tablets and other notebooks will have more than double shipments in the next four years and will reach 590 million by 2016.

Ultrabook from Intel is a lightweight and thin laptop and it is expected to be the key driver together with tablets to secure 73% of the total market as traditional notebooks are also left in the lurch.

Ultrabook will ship 178 million by 2016, a 3-times growth compared to tablets. Tablets though will reach 253 million.

Juniper notes that OEMs should invest in Solid State Drive data storage and other hardware and software to implement thinner designs and attract consumers.

Daniel Ashdown, the author of the report stated that Solid state storage in ultrabooks and tablets make them superior than HDDs but needs to be balanced against capacity and cost. Vendors need to explore options.

Windows 8 is expected to aid ultrabooks adoption.
