The phone is rapidly gaining more importance in our lives. It is no longer a device to merely make or receive calls.
These multi-functional devices can take pictures, entertain users, give us directions, give access to the web and has a better memory. Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google, remarked at the Mobile World Congress that the rule now is ‘mobile first’. According to him, the mobile is getting prioritized in everything including applications. He has even hailed the mobile phone as our ‘alter ego’.
Google has chosen to place the ‘mobile first’ after the enormous success of their Android OS. Schmidt gives us a clear picture of the growing popularity of the Android by saying that approximately 60,000 Android mobile phones are sold daily and the number is increasing.
Following the new philosophy of placing the ‘mobile first’, Google will give more importance to the mobile phone applications and services than the desktop. Google’s endeavour was described by Schmidt as ‘sorcery’. He provided a demo of the Google Goggles Translation and said the Instant Speech-to-Speech translation is coming soon.
