In November 2009, Google made an announcement regarding its plans of acquiring AdMob, the mobile advertising firm, for a whooping $750 million.
However, the deal is under the threat of antitrust issues from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). According to the Wall Street Journal, an internal litigation team has been assembled by the FTC for blocking the deal. It has also briefed the U.S. Congress regarding the acquisition.
This news follows the report that rivals of both these companies have been invited by FTC for submission of sworn declarations of their opinion on whether the deal should proceed. The consumer groups have remarked that Google’s acquisition will minimize the rivalry in the mobile marketing industry.
Apple has recently acquired Quattro Wireless, AdMob’s rival. It is being expected that Apple will launch its very own mobile advertising network along with the launch of its iPhone 4.0. This news might encourage Google to set out to prove that its acquisition of AdMob will not affect competition in the mobile ads industry.
