Gerrard’s goal against USA triggered 1.5 million SMS in England

The 2010 World Cup is witnessing more text messages after a goal and not bets before a goal is scored.

Mobile has joined hands with billmonitor.com to reveal the number of phone calls and text messages sent by England football fans during a match.

Billmonitor.com is a new service in the U.K. that aids consumers in finding the most suitable mobile phone contract for themselves. In the few minutes following Steven Gerrad’s opening goal against USA, England fans went into a SMS frenzy resulting in the exchange of over 1.5 million text messages. Robert Green’s blunder triggered another 1.2 million text messages.

More than 20 million text messages were sent by U.K. consumers in the two hours following England’s opening match at the World Cup. It amounted to over £2 million.

Last Saturday witnessed 66 percent hike in text messages than regular Saturdays as England fans were busy finalizing where they would watch the match.
