Further delay in UK cross operator m-wallet project

The joint Project Oscar was unveiled last summer by Everything Everywhere, O2 and Vodafone.

The plan was to create a single mobile wallet that could be used by third parties for coupons, loyalty programs and NFC payments and more.

3UK, Virgin and others were not part of the original team and they gave the project quite some stick. EC approval was also needed.

A combination of all this stalled Project Oscar and chances of it going live before London Olympics have been delayed. As per the Daily Telegraph, EC is supposed to make a ruling today but they are going to declare a need to examine the proposals again.

A quoted source said that reexamination is needed because the EC feels that the entire mobile payment market is still in an embryonic stage.

While this is true but monopoly is the bigger issue. Google Wallet and Quick Tap from Orange don’t have these hurdles.
