Funzio acquired by Gree

The Japanese social gaming specialist has inked this high profile deal and has added a company to its portfolio that has the most number of franchises in the latest gaming era.

Kingdom Age, Modern War and Crime City have, between them, enjoyed more than 20 million downloads.

Through this acquisition GREE will also look to expand in the west. It started the process by buying OpenFeint for $104m in April 2011. It also invested in Wizcorp and IUGO last month. GREE now also has a new base in San Francisco where it employs more than 220 US employees.

GREE has a target of acquiring 1 billion users worldwide. Naoki Aoyagi, CEO of GREE International said that Funzio creates some of the best mobile games in the world. This partnership will allow GREE to add its vision for a mobile social gaming ecosystem with Funzio’s creativity.

The founders and officers of Funzio will all join GREE.
