According to Ericsson, December 2009 saw mobile data traffic overtake voice traffic in the mobile telephone industry.
Globally, data traffic has grown by 280% over the last years and is expected to grow doubly every year for the next five years.
As per Hans Vestberg, President and CEO, Ericsson, this is a milestone because 400 million subscriptions are generating more data traffic than what 4.6 billion subscriptions are generating in voice traffic.
While the news has not surprised mobile operators in the UK, they will be under increased pressure to update their network infrastructure to cope with the increased demand for data. The consumers are looking at higher download speed from the Internet.
Those operators who will offer better user experience are expected to attract more customers. The UK mobile operators will quickly need to catch up with their counterparts in the USA and move towards 4G network that will provide higher download speed.
