Cross industry collaboration for contactless mobile payments

Several mobile and financial companies, including GSMA, have announced the trail of contactless mobile payments at the 2010 Mobile World Congress held at Barcelona.

The announcement was made recently by La Caixa, Ingenico, Giesecke and Devrient and ITN International in association with Visa, Telefonica, O2 parent and Samsung. They want to offer Sim-based NFC payments pilot, which is a first of its kind.

The guest at the Mobile world Congress received over 400 NFC handsets by the participating companies for a trail. It was a Samsung Star NFC Handset which had the La Caixa Visa mobile Payment Application. This handset had a Telefonica Sim card along with pre-loaded O2. It also had 60 Euros airtime credit.

The guests could use this handset to pay up to 75 Euros for food and drinks at over 30 merchant locations at the Congress. This cross industry collaboration with multiple partners led by GSMA is an achievement in its own. According to Michael O’Hara, Chief Marketing Officer at GSMA, this year might witness additional commercial launches of Sim-based NFC services.
