Apple the #1 smartphone maker in Q4

A record 155 million smartphone units were shipped in Q4 of 2011, ending the year with a 54% rise in the number of units shipped.

This report was published by research firm Strategy Analytics.

It was reported in October that Samsung had become the largest shipper of smartphones in Q3. It is possible that people were waiting for the release of iPhone 4S and this has turned out to be true. Apple is now the top smartphone maker in the world and had 24% of the market share in Q4. It sold 37 million units in Q4, a 128% rise and its highest till date.

As per Research Analytics, Samsung has, for the first time, become the highest smartphone seller as it occupied top spot in 2011 with 20% market share. The smartphone market is now largely a two horse race between these two.  Nokia’s share, meanwhile halved to 16% in 2011.
