Android smartphone units to touch a billion by 2013

It has been only four years that Android was launched and it is expected that the sales of smartphones powered by Android will touch the one billion figure next year.

This was forecasted by IHS.

357 million Android smartphones will be shipped in 2012 and the expected figures for 2013 are 451 million units. This means that by the end of 2013 the total figure for Android powered smartphones will be 1.1 billion since 2008.

IHS also mentioned in the same report that Apple will ship 527 million units by the end of 2013 and it will only touch the billion mark in 2015.

As per Daniel Gleeson, IHS mobile analyst, Google’s open source model means that smartphone makers can easily customize Android as per their own requirements. And since they can eliminate licensing fees the adoption of Android among smartphone manufacturers is more.

This comes as encouraging news for Google amid all the news about iPhone 5.
