A day of activation of 700,000 Android phones?

Andy Rubin, mobile chief of Google made this announcement through his Google+ account.

And to remind others that he was aware of the veracity of his comments he added, “…and for those wondering, we count each device only once (i.e. we don’t count re-sold devices), and “activations” means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service.”

Last summer Google announced that they were activating 550,000 Android devices a day, a claim that was rubbished by Apple that said that Google was counting upgrades by its existing users too.

Anyway, the new figure of 700,000 activations a day means 21 million activations a month or 250 million activations a year. This stacks up against the latest estimates that say that Apple will be shipping 111 million iPhones and 40 million iPads this year. Of course, it’s two Apple devices against countless Android devices.
