32 apps affected by BadNews

Mobile security firm Lookout has identified a new malware family called BadNews that has been found in 32 Google Play Store apps developed by four developers.

BadNews has been labeled as an innocent but aggressive ad network that triggers prompts for app installations. It also displays fake messages that promote affiliated apps by pushing out other monetization malwares.

As per data from Google Play two to nine million affected apps have already been downloaded. While the earlier versions of these affected apps don’t have the malicious codes BadNews does pose a high degree of risk for a large number of users.

The worst part of the app is that it can leak personal info including device model, phone number and even device IMEI.

All Android users are advised to use discretion while downloading apps and only download apps from trusted developers. Checking any app’s permissions is absolutely required to check the functionality.
