220m 4G LTE mobile broadband subscriptions by 2014

The number of 4G LTE mobile broadband subscribers is estimated to be 105 million this year and this figure is expected to more than double next year and reach the 220 million figure.

This research data comes from Juniper.

2012 was the breakthrough year for 4G LTE services and the research predicts volume subscriptions in 2013. However, the global reach of this service is still limited and what is expected to drive signups is the embedding of LTE technology in various consumer devices. The research also suggests that operators can completely bypass 3G in the developing markets and introduce 4G.

TD-LTE (Time Division) is a cost effective 4G solution that can efficiently use an unpaired spectrum. China, India and Japan are driving TD-LTE and there will be increased rollout in other parts of the world. China Mobile has already declared an investment of $6.7 billion. This means device vendors will need to introduce TD-LTE versions.
