12.5% increase in the number of U.K. mobile shops

Mobile shops in the U.K. have increased from 3,847 to 4,329, amounting to a rise in 12.5 percent in the last one year.

This data has been revealed by a survey conducted by The Local Data Company.

One of the mobile service providers that have witnessed a considerable expansion in the time between April 2010 and April 2011 is Orange. Orange has expanded its retail units from 306 to 407, resulting in 37.5 percent increase.

The company to top the charts is Carphone with 812 stores all over the nation.

The Midlands and London have witnessed average increase while Wales (51%), North West (20%), east of England (19%) and Scotland (17%) recorded above average increase. Central London has the highest number of stores – 216.

According to the director of The Local Data Company, Matthew Hopkins, intense web-based competition is affecting independents. Consequently many are opting for a brand franchise over independents.
